Nfl Tickets ? League Officially Adopts New Overtime Rule

Posted on 08 July 2010 by admin

Regardless of the supporters for the sudden-death overtime, the NFL has moved forward and made a significant change to its overtime policy, though it will only take effect come playoff time. Amidst clamoring that the sudden-death overtime based on a coin toss was unfair, NFL owners voted in a landslide victory to update the policy, which again proves that the NFL is far and away the most efficient league around and is willing to update its rules and regulations to fit an ever-evolving professional sports landscape.

Instead of the usual sudden-death overtime, if the first team with the ball kicks a field goal, the second team will still have a chance to match the score. If the second team matches the score, then they will move on to a sudden-death overtime. However, if the second team scores a touchdown, then the game will be over, which is somewhat similar to the way that the college overtime is handled right now. A touchdown on any possession will end the game.

How the rule change will actually affect the 2010 season will not be known, as we may not even have an overtime game in the postseason next year, but the NFL has announced loud and clear that it is willing to listen to fans. After Brett Favre and his Minnesota Vikings remained on the sidelines as the New Orleans Saints marched down the field in overtime of last season’s NFC Championship game, fans immediately began complaining that the sudden-death overtime rule was not fair for the team that did not win the toss.

Even though statistically the sudden-death overtime proved to be mostly fair, fans used to seeing college football overtimes simply could not accept having one offense sit out the extra time period when something could be done to rectify the situation. NFL tickets are already a hot commodity all year long, though the rule change could help them even further come playoff time.

But the NFL was wise not to give in too much to the demands of fans, who would likely enjoy seeing a college overtime for both the regular season and playoffs. Though the college overtime certainly is exciting, it also doesn’t much resemble the actual game of football, which is why it has as many critics as it has backers. In the college OT, the clock stops and the game proceeds possession by possession. While football is typically played with a clock and starts with a kickoff, college overtime does not, which would make it an awkward fit in the NFL.

The other major reason that the NFL didn’t consider adopting a change to the regular season is because of the added risk of injury. Players are always at more of a risk during longer games statistically, making a long, possession-by-possession overtime an unacceptable risk for franchise players worth millions of dollar to their team. As it is, a team that plays in an overtime game the week before is already at a statistical disadvantage the following week, which would only increase if the overtime was lengthened.

Ultimately, the rule change itself isn’t that significant, though it eliminates some of the controversy surrounding the coin toss and won’t allow a team to simply settle for a field goal if they get the ball first. However, the new overtime is a logistical rule change that is a nice hybrid between the sudden-death overtime and the college format and is further evidence as to why the NFL remains ahead of the other professional sports leagues in the country.

Favre Given Deadline: NFL News, NFL Football Picks

Posted on 07 July 2010 by admin

Brett Favre Given Deadline for Vikings Decision.

Brett Favre has only 2 weeks to decide whether or not to animate his NFL career.

Darrell Bevell, The Vikings Offensive Coordinator, has put Favre through a stringent passing session last week and reportedly liked what he saw.

NFL Football Picks says that, “to play for the Vikes this season following arthroscopic shoulder surgery, Brett Favre has been demure on whether he’ll be equipping in time.”

On July 29, Minnesota goes into mini-camp and sources claimed that Favre must give the franchise his decision before then.

The Minnesota Vikings have long been rumored to be interested in signing the 39-year-old gun slinger and it seems the moment of truth is not far away.

The decision is likely to be right on the July 29 deadline, with Favre hesitant to commit until he’s 100% certain his body can handle the strain of another grueling season.

In 2007, after retiring from the Packers, Brett Favre decided to come back and signed a deal with the New York Jets.

This year, in April, Favre then retired for the 2nd time after the Jets decided they would not extend his 1 year contract.

Last year, Favre’s season with the Jets started well; in week four he threw six touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals, a personal best and one fewer than the NFL record. By week 12, the Jets had compiled an 8-3 record, including a win over the previously undefeated Tennessee Titans.

However, the Jets lost four out of the last five games of the season including the final game against the Miami Dolphins, who had acquired Chad Pennington after he was released from the Jets to make room for Favre.

In a recent interview, the NFL’s all-time leader in touchdowns, receptions and receiving yards, Jerry Rice didn’t show a lot of confidence in Favre. Rice said the stress of a 16-game season might be too much for a 39-year-old.

“Brett is a competitor. But I know towards the latter part of my career, even though I still wanted to be out on that football field, it was like things became a little bit more difficult,” Rice told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Houston will sit gimpy QB Matt Schaub to rest his ankle for the home opener against the Jets. Second-string quarterback Rex Grossman has a hamstring injury but will see limited duty. Dan Orlovsky will start and look to improve on his last performance against the Vikings in week three where he completed seven-of-11 passes for 74 yards, with an interception and no touchdowns. Keep an eye on WR Jacoby Jones to continue his strong preseason and rookie running back Arian Foster to get most of the carries. Rookie LB Brian Cushing could see his first preseason action. Tampa Bay is entering this game after having fired Offensive Coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski and will look to open up the playbook to get better results than their first three games. The Bucs have named Byron Leftwich their starting QB and he will sit this one out handing the reigns over to highly touted rookie Josh Freeman.
